Pre- and Post-Procedure Instructions

Below are pre- and post-procedure instructions to help guide you and make the process as easy as possible. Having a better understanding of what is involved will help manage your expectations to feel more comfortable.

GETTING READY

  • Discontinue wearing contact lenses 1-3 weeks prior to your procedure date. The doctor will advise you based on your lens type.

  • Plan on having a driver to take you home from the procedure.

DAY OF PROCEDURE

  • Your procedure is usually scheduled on a Friday at Monticello Community Surgery Center. UVA LASIK will notify you of your arrival date and time. Please arrive on time.

  • Bring all of the medications prescribed by Dr. Odrich with you on the day of your procedure.

  • Prior to the procedure, the doctor will place local anesthetic (numbing) drops in your eye(s).

  • The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes per eye. Plan on being at the center for about an hour.

  • You'll most likely notice clearer vision immediately.

  • You will need someone to drive you home.

  • You will be instructed to go home and keep your eyes closed for the duration of the day.

Post-Procedure

  • You will visit with Dr. Odrich and the UVA LASIK team the following morning for a quick visit.

  • Most of our patients report no more than mild discomfort for a day or so after LASIK. There is more discomfort associated with PRK, usually lasting a few days. PRK also takes longer before achieving optimal vision. Typically, the vision is functional after a week for PRK. Pain medication may be prescribed for PRK, if necessary.

  • Your vision will continue to improve within days for LASIK and months for PRK. Data shows a patient satisfaction rate of up to 98%, with more than 90% of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better.

  • Most LASIK patients are able to drive after seeing Dr. Odrich at their 1-day post-op appointment. PRK patients are usually able to drive in about a week after the procedure.

  • Most people who have LASIK return to work on Monday after a Friday procedure. With PRK, we recommend two or three days of rest prior to returning to work.

  • Do not rub your eyes after either PRK or LASIK.

  • Please use your eye drops as instructed.

  • Wear sunglasses.

  • No make-up is allowed for one week.

  • Avoid contaminated water, such as pools and hot tubs, for one week. After that, goggles should be worn for 8 weeks. For ocean sports, goggles should be worn for 6 months after the procedure.

  • No sports for one week. Wear protective goggles for 6 months when participating in all contact sports.
